EXSPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF POSITION OF PIVOT POINT BY TANGENTIAL VELOCITIES OF BOW AND STERN.
Abstract
The new method of experimental determination of position of pivot point by changes of character of distribution of local tangential velocities on the fore and aft perpendiculars is presented in this article. During ship handling using overview and comparative method it seems for operator, that vessel rotates around him, when in reality vessel rotates around pivot point (PP). It causes wrong assessment of distances to landmarks and creates background for emergency situation. In case of changes in position of point of application of lateral forces position of PP also changes. It considerably affects to character of maneuvers. Especially such effect appears during maneuvers of tall ships (TS), for which position of application of lateral forces cannot be determine correctly by calculation method. Due to this experimental determination of position of PP for TS is quite topical. Method of determination of instantaneous position of pivot point can be used at any ships for increasing of accuracy of ship handling during marine operations.
