COMMUNICATIVE METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH AS A MARITIME ELEMENT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE COMPETENCY APPROACH

Abstract

Competency-based approach being implemented experimentally at Kherson State Maritime Academy seeks for adjustments to the communicative teaching of English for specific purposes. Competency-based approach is built around the notion «communicative competence» that sets certain challenges for English teachers who are efficient with communicative teaching the aim of which is similar – to develop students’ communicative skills. Thereby, the aim of this article is comparative analysis of competency-based and communicative approaches to teaching maritime English for fulfilling the task of having the competency-based approach implemented. Some applied aspects of competency-based approach implementation within the framework of teaching maritime English communicatively are paid attention to. Emphasizing the necessity of focused work over such elements of competency-based approach that complement communicative teaching as designing basic communicative competencies for solving practical tasks, defining criteria for competencies assessment and procedure of demonstrating competencies mastery by students, the author comes to the conclusion that communicative and competency-based approaches are complementary with a brief list of distinctive characteristics. In the author’s opinion, the formula for efficient combination of competency-based and communicative approaches to teaching maritime English – perfect mastery of communicative teaching plus adequately formulated and assessed communicative competencies required by modern maritime industry.
