ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL-AND-ECONOMIC INDEXES ESSENTIAL FOR CHOICE OF BALLAST WATER TREATMENT PLANTS

Abstract

The article reveals technical-and-economic indexes which determine efficiency of equipment for ballast water treatment. The main aim of the research is to define the parameters essential for rational choice of onboard ballast water treatment during new ship design or re-equipment of the available ships. The author emphasizes that methods of technical-and-economic and statistical analysis of numerous indexes should be used, considering loads of commercially available plants for ballast water treatment. The article shows technological diagrams of ballast treatment where qualitative characteristics are considered. Ranges of weight-size parameters, plants power consumption, capital and operation costs changes are determined. The author points out the major possible factors of negative impact on environment and crew’s safety with regards to plants for ballast water treatment. Analysis of these indexes provides an opportunity to define rational engineering solutions at the stage of conceptual ship design and work out integrated index of effectiveness for ballast water treatment plants.
