Abstract

The paper analyzes the causes of accidents at sea, reveals the concept of the human factor in relation to the safety of navigation. Such terms as activity, extreme or emergency situations are exploited and given their further interpretation. The importance of the work in uncovering human behavior in extreme situations in the course of their professional activities on marine vessels determined its purpose in the form of an empirical research to ascertain the reasons for successful work in extreme conditions on the one hand, and the elucidation of many factors hindering its implementation on the other hand. All the factors stated enhance the necessity for professional selection and training of crew members. Empirical studies have proved that personal features of seafarers should be mentioned above all the reasons, which ensure the possibility of successful human activities in extreme conditions. It is shown that the activity of people in particular extreme situations requires professional selection. Hence, high-quality and well-trained crew will be able to manage extreme situations
